Garry Kasparov: When Putin's Thugs Came for Me - WSJ.com

Garry Kasparov: When Putin's Thugs Came for Me - WSJ.com

Moscow
The only surprise to come out of Friday's guilty verdict in the trial here of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot was how many people acted surprised. Three young women were sentenced to two years in prison for the prank of singing an anti-Putin "prayer" in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Their jailing was the next logical step for Vladimir Putin's steady crackdown on "acts against the social order," the Kremlin's expansive term for any public display of resistance.
In the 100 days since Mr. Putin's re-election as president, severe new laws against public protest have been passed and the homes of opposition leaders have been raided. These are not the actions of a regime prepared to grant leniency to anyone who offends Mr. Putin's latest ally, the Orthodox Church and its patriarch.

Police detain author Garry Kasparov during the trial of the female punk band "Pussy Riot" outside a court building in Moscow, August 17, 2012.
Unfortunately, I was not there to hear the judge's decision, which she took several hours to read. The crowds outside the court building made entry nearly impossible, so I stood in a doorway and took questions from journalists. Suddenly, I was dragged away by a group of police—in fact carried away with one policeman on each arm and leg.
The men refused to tell me why I was being arrested and shoved me into a police van. When I got up to again ask why I had been detained, things turned violent. I was restrained, choked and struck several times by a group of officers before being driven to the police station with dozens of other protesters. After several hours I was released, but not before they told me I was being criminally investigated for assaulting a police officer who claimed I had bitten him.
It would be easy to laugh at such a bizarre charge when there are already so many videos and photos of the police assaulting me. But in a country where you can be imprisoned for two years for singing a song, laughter does not come easily. My bruises will heal long before the members of Pussy Riot are free to see their young children again. In the past, Mr. Putin's critics and enemies have been jailed on a wide variety of spurious criminal charges, from fraud to terrorism.
But now the masks are off. Unlikely as it may be, the three members of Pussy Riot have become our first true political prisoners.
Such a brazen step should raise alarms, but the leaders of the Free World are clearly capable of sleeping through any wake-up call. If this was all business as usual for the Putin justice system, the same was true for the international reaction. A spokesman for the Obama administration called the sentence "disproportionate," as if the length of the prison term were the only problem with open repression of political speech. The Russian Constitution is freely available online, but this was a medieval show trial with no connection to the criminal code.
Mr. Putin is not worried about what the Western press says, or about celebrities tweeting their support for Pussy Riot. These are not the constituencies that concern him. Friday, the Russian paper Vedomosti reported that former Deutsche Bank CEO Josef Ackermann could be put in charge of managing the hundreds of billions of dollars in the Russian sovereign wealth fund. As long as bankers and other Western elites eagerly line up to do Mr. Putin's bidding, the situation in Russia will only get worse.
If officials at the U.S. State Department are as "seriously concerned" about free speech in Russia as they say, I suggest they drop their opposition to the Magnitsky Act pending in the Senate. That legislation would bring financial and travel sanctions against the functionaries who enact the Kremlin's agenda of repression. Mouthing concern only reinforces the fact that no action will be taken.
Mr. Putin could not care less about winning public-relations battles in the Western press, or about fighting them at all. He and his cronies care only about money and power. Today's events make it clear that they will fight for those things until Russia's jails are full.
Mr. Kasparov, a contributing editor of The Wall Street Journal, is the leader of the Russian pro-democracy group United Civil Front and chairman of the U.S.-based Human Rights Foundation. He resides in Moscow.

Zynga Continues To Dominate And Expand Social Gaming As COO Schappert Exits - Seeking Alpha

Zynga Continues To Dominate And Expand Social Gaming As COO Schappert Exits - Seeking Alpha

Zynga's (ZNGA) second half of 2012 will bring to fruition several recent seminal events. Take a look at how CEO Mark Pincus has positioned his company to expand Zynga's brand.
"Draw Something" Television Game Show Coming This Fall
Ryan Seacrest, CBS, and Zynga will launch "Draw Something" the TV game show. This is an incredible branding opportunity that will drive viewers to play online.
The popular Zynga gaming app is being turned into a television game show, and CBS was victorious in the bidding war for the pilot. The show is a product ofRyan Seacrest Productions, Sony Pictures Television and Embassy Row (the team behind Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" and "The Glee Project"). On board to executive produce the pilot are Ryan, RSP CEO Adam Sher, and Michael Davies ("Who Wants To Be A Millionaire").
Hasbro (HAS) Is Creating Zynga Toys And Board Games
There's a good chance this Christmas some of you will purchase a first edition Zynga/Hasbro board game or toy for your children.
Through this agreement, Hasbro has obtained the license to develop and distribute wide ranging product lines based on Zynga's game brands in a number of toy and game categories. This deal also creates an array of opportunities for co-branded merchandise featuring a combination of both Hasbro and Zynga brands.
Tracey Lien, writing for "The Verge" comments on Zynga's licensing agreement:
The results of this deal are a slew of Zynga games coming to retail this fall. Some of the games that are crossing over from digital into the board game world include CityVille Monopoly ($24.99), Hungry Hungry Herd (a cross between FarmVille and Hungry Hungry Hippos,$22.99), Words With Friends ($19.99), and Draw Something (TBA). The games are expected to be available at retail in October and November.
Zynga's Mobile Gaming Strategy
Zynga just released "Gems With Friends" for mobile only on August 9th, and there is a strong pipeline of new games that will be strategically rolled out during Q3 and Q4. Pincus is ramping up Zynga to dominate the mobile gaming space. Zynga's mobile games for iPhone, iPad, Android and Android tablets can be viewed and downloaded here.
Zynga's Latest Facebook (FB) Game "The Ville" Is Climbing The Charts
"The Ville" has soared to an unbelievable 54.7 million MAU (monthly average users) and is ranked number one according toAppData. AppData ranks "FarmVille" second, and "CityVille" third, all Zynga games. The aggregate of these 3 Zynga games is over 130 million MAU. Once again Zynga demonstrates that it reaches the largest and broadest audience of any social gaming company. Look for more of the same as Zynga continues to expand its footprint.
Although "The Ville" is ranked number one, there is a fly in the ointment. Electronic Arts (EA) filed a lawsuit against Zynga alleging copyright infringement. Zynga's General Counsel issued this response:
It's unfortunate that EA thought that this was an appropriate response to our game, and clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of basic copyright principles. It's also ironic that EA brings this suit shortly after launching SimCity Social which bears an uncanny resemblance to Zynga's CityVille game. Nonetheless, we plan to defend our rights to the fullest extent possible and intend to win with players.
Zynga is cooking up something special this week with the release of "ChefVille." Emily Price, a tech writer for Mashable, writes:
Ingredients are key in game play, and each item you learn to cook in the game is made from scratch using the same things you might use if you were making the dish in the real world. Just like you might ask to borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor in real life, ChefVilleencourages you to ask your neighbors for help with ingredients you don't have.
McDonalds (MCD) and Zynga Partnership
Zynga and McDonalds joined forces for a one day campaign on "FarmVille" during the latter part of 2010. If Pincus seals a McDonalds' advertising deal on "FarmVille," or gets those scaled down collectible farm animals into a Happy Meal, this would he huge for Zynga's revenue and branding. I would not be surprised to hear that Pincus has partnered with Mickey D's before the end of the year.
Pincus Sets A New Tone For Zynga
CEO Mark Pincus has set the tone for Zynga's management and staff. If you are complacent, lack initiative, unproductive, or fail to successfully perform your responsibilities, you will be replaced. And so it goes, we bid farewell to COO John Schappert, whom experienced a rude awaking when he appeared to be sleeping at the switch.
Pincus's decision to strip Schappert of his responsibilities was not a scapegoat tactic as Zynga's enemies allege, but a necessary action to correct a perceived deficiency. There is no reason to sell Zynga's stock, but every reason to consider buying at these historically low prices. As I explained in a recent article "Zynga: No Games, Just The Facts" the financial facts and metrics are solid. The stock is oversold and a low risk investment.
Schappert's recruitment was based upon his experience at Electronic Arts. Unfortunately, "past performance should not be considered an indicator of future results." There is no guarantee that the passion, commitment and vision success requires will follow an executive to his next position. Sometimes the veteran guy is unable to catch the vision, and consequently, takes down the company -- a memory that would haunt Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs for the remainder of his life.
When Steve Jobs hired former PepsiCo's (PEP) VP John Sculley to run Apple (AAPL), he never imagined Sculley's ineptness would nearly destroy Apple and lead to one of the worst decisions ever made by an executive, firing the founder and gifted visionary, Steve Jobs. Just like Jobs, Pincus concluded he had the wrong man minding the operation. But unlike Jobs, Pincus acted decisively. Suffice it to say, the success of Zynga is paramount to any man's position.

New Online Poker Room Opens; Claims to be Legal in US

New Online Poker Room Opens; Claims to be Legal in US

New Online Poker Room Opens; Claims to be Legal in US

by SADONNA PRICE on JULY 13, 2012
After Black Friday, online poker seemed nonexistent in the United States. Players longed for an opportunity to play online poker without having to worry about the funds in their account and now they supposedly have that opportunity. SkillBet has now launched in the United States and they claim to be legal in the majority of states in the US.
The new site is different than the online poker sites we have known in the past. Players at the site do not compete at the same table against other players. Instead the players will challenge other players by playing at similar tables, not the same one. SkillBet is claiming that this way, players are playing with more skill rather than a skill/chance game.
During a game at SkillBet, two players will set in the same seat but at two separate tables and players will be surrounded by the exact same computer players. Players will then be dealt the exact same cards. The same community cards will be dealt at each table and the outcome of the game will depend not the decision making of the players.
SkillBet commented on their option at their site which read: “We offer games of skill only. Our first game is like regular No Limit Texas Hold’em without the luck of the draw (e.g., both players play the same hand against the same opponents). The only factor determining who wins are the decision of the two players – and therefore, it is unquestionably a game of skill.
“Our games are no different from carnival games, chess and golf tournaments or other skill-based games that have been played for cash or prizes for hundreds of years.”
SkillBet has stated that many experts agree that their options have eliminated the element of chance. March Zwillinger a gambling law expert is in agreement and states that the site is totally legal. This could be the start of a different type of poker site online. Players can check out the site now and it will be interesting to see if SkillBet will receive any opposition or if they will be able to remain operating in the United States.

In A Bold Move, Amazon Is Hiring Game Developers Right Under Zynga's Nose - Business Insider

In A Bold Move, Amazon Is Hiring Game Developers Right Under Zynga's Nose - Business Insider

Don't be fooled: Amazon's ambitions in the games business go far beyond providing a platform for social games on its Kindle Fire tablet.
From the kind of people it's hiring, it's clear that Amazon intends to challenge Zynga, King.com, and other makers of social games head-on.
Amazon is already quietly publishing online games through a subsidiary, A2Z Research and Development, and is aggressively expanding in San Francisco—the home turf of Zynga, the leader of the social-gaming industry.
Asked about its social-gaming plans, an Amazon.com PR representative declined to comment.
In a little-noticed move, Amazon bought Reflexive Entertainment, a maker of so-called casual games, in 2008. But Zynga has since upended the business, replacing the casual business model of cheap or advertising-supported games with the dominant social-gaming revenue stream of today: in-game currency purchases.
Amazon continues to run the Reflexive business as a development studio in Orange County. But Business Insider has learned that Amazon is trying to staff up a studio in San Francisco—Zynga's home turf.
According to A2Z's website, that office houses employees working on digital-music efforts such as Amazon's MP3 download store.
Right now, there are just a handful of job listings explicitly mentioning games. But already, some veterans of Rivet Games, a high-flying games startup which folded up shop earlier this year, have landed at Amazon. And in the surest sign of big hiring plans ahead, Amazon has added recruiters with specific experience in hiring games developers.
We're also told that Amazon's been trying to hire a high-ranking executive to run a full-fledged studio.
And there's one more thing: Last month, Zynga declared itself openly in competition with Amazon Web Services with its new zCloud offering—at least for game developers looking for cloud computing. And Zynga's move to offer game-publishing services and social features to third-party developers likewise competes with Amazon's brand-new GameCircle service.

Bibi obeys "the law"

Defeating the Jewish Alinskyites

Saul Alinsky.jpg
Saul Alinsky, the godfather of subversive radical political action, had a very clear strategy for undermining and destroying his enemies: Infiltrate, divide and destroy.

Since his disciple Barack Obama was elected US president in 2008, Alinsky's impact on Obama has received a fair amount of attention.

Less noticed has been the adoption of Alinsky's methods by radical leftist Jews in the US and Israel for the purpose of undermining the American Jewish community on the one hand, and Israel's nationalist camp on the other. This week we saw the impact of both campaigns.

The striking weakness of the American Jewish community was exposed on Tuesday with the Democratic primary defeat of Rep. Steve Rothman in New Jersey. In Israel we saw the impact of the campaign to undermine and destroy the nationalist camp with the defeat of the proposed legislation aimed at saving the doomed Givat Haulpana neighborhood in Bet El.

Ahead of the 2008 US presidential elections, the anti-Israel pressure group J Street made a sudden appearance. Claiming to be pro-Israel, the anti-Israel lobby set about neutralizing the power of the American Jewish community by undermining community solidarity. And it has succeeded brilliantly.

Rothman is Jewish and a strong supporter of Israel. His defeat at the polls in New Jersey by Rep. Bill Pascrell owed in large part to openly anti-Semitic activism by Pascrell's Muslim supporters.

According to an investigative report of the primary campaign by theWashington Free Beacon's Adam Kredo, in February Pascrell's Muslim supporters began castigating Rothman and his supporters as disloyal Americans beholden only to Israel.

Aref Assaf, president of the New Jersey-based American Arab Forum, published a column in the Newark Star Ledger titled, "Rothman is Israel's Man in District 9." He wrote, "As total and blind support becomes the only reason for choosing Rothman, voters who do not view the elections in this prism will need to take notice. Loyalty to a foreign flag is not loyalty to America's [flag]."

These deeply bigoted allegations against Rothman and his supporters were not challenged by Pascrell. Pascrell also did not challenge Arabic-language campaign posters produced by his supporters enjoining the "Arab diaspora community" to elect Pascrell, "the friend of the Arabs." The poster touted the race as "the most important election in the history of the [Arab American] community."

Rather than challenge these anti-Semitic attacks, Pascrell enthusiastically courted the Muslim vote in his district.

Pascrell was a signatory to what became known as the "Gaza-54 letter." Spearheaded by J Street, the 2010 letter, signed by 54 Democratic congressmen, called on Obama to put pressure on Israel to end its "collective punishment" of residents of Hamas-controlled Gaza.

Pascrell's race was far from the only recent instance of anti-Semitism being employed by Democratic candidates to win their elections. In Connecticut's 2006 Democratic Senate primary, anti-Semitic slurs and innuendos were prominent features of Ned Lamont's successful race against Sen. Joseph Lieberman. Defeated in his party's primary, Lieberman was forced to run as an Independent. He owed his reelection to Republican support.

LIEBERMAN'S GENERAL election victory over Lamont did not force all of his fellow Democrats to rethink their use of anti-Semitism as a campaign strategy. At a candidate's debate in this year's Connecticut Democratic Senate primary race, candidate Lee Whitnum attacked her opponent Rep. Chris Murphy as a "whore who sells his soul to AIPAC."

Given the fact that the overwhelming majority of Jewish Americans are supporters of the Democratic Party, it should have been assumed that they would have responded to Whitnum's anti- Semitic slurs by seeking to get her expelled from their party. They also could have been expected to pour resources into defeating candidates like Pascrell who actively court the votes of open Jew-haters. But this didn't happen.

J Street Soros.jpg
Instead, due to J Street's agitation, and the penetration of the Jewish organizational world by J Street fellow travelers, for the past three years, the American Jewish community has been fighting among itself about what it means to be pro-Israel. At a time when the US Jewish community's party of choice is increasingly falling under the influence of radical leftists and Muslims who reject Israel's right to exist, rather than standing tall, Jewish communities around the US are being neutralized by the solipsism of self-defeating, J-Street-invented issues like whether AIPAC is legitimate and whether Jewish anti-Zionists can be considered pro-Israel.

Equally horrible, if not worse, at a time when Israel is being threatened with annihilation by Iran, and Jewish communities in Europe and Latin America are under physical assault, the voice of the self-obsessed American Jewish community is coming through more and more weakly, with powerful voices questioning the very legitimacy of its collective voice.

In Israel, the success of local Alinskyites was on display this week as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu found himself squaring off against his party's most committed constituency.

The 350,000 Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria and their massive support base inside the Likud, and indeed throughout Israeli society, suffered a tremendous defeat this week.

Netanyahu's decision to torpedo a proposed law that would have prevented the implementation of the Supreme Court-ordered destruction of the Givat Haulpana neighborhood in Beit El has made these Likud members perceive themselves as isolated and in danger.

Just as the American Jewish community needs to recognize the J Street effect to contend with its current condition, so in Israel both sides of the divide in the nationalist camp need to understand how they came to find themselves on opposite sides of the fence.

Misreading what has happened, many are drawing false analogies between Givat Haulpana and the destruction of the Jewish communities in Gaza in 2005 and the destruction of homes in Amona in 2006. In both those previous cases, the destruction of the homes was the consequence of government policy. Then-premier Ariel Sharon wanted to destroy the Jewish communities of Gaza and northern Samaria. Their destruction was the centerpiece of his governing agenda. So, too, his successor Ehud Olmert wanted to destroy Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. He ran on a policy of destroying them in the 2006 elections.

This is not the case with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu can be faulted for not providing sufficient protection to Jewish property rights in Judea and Samaria. He has not permitted Jews to build on state land to make up for the fact that they face market discrimination from the Palestinian Authority which has made it a capital crime to sell private land to Jews. And of course, he bowed to US pressure and instituted the deeply prejudicial temporary construction ban on Jews in 2009 and 2010.

But unlike Sharon and Olmert, Netanyahu has not made the destruction of the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria a goal of his government.

To the contrary, he has enacted initiatives to strengthen the Jewish communities there and to raise the general public's awareness of the centrality of Judea and Samaria to Jewish history and heritage.

Netanyahu is not the best friend of the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. But he is more a friend than an enemy.

SO IF Netanyahu doesn't oppose the communities of Judea and Samaria, why is he supporting the destruction of Givat Haulpana? The answer is that he and his angry constituents were set up by the radicals who run the state prosecution.

Mike Blass.jpg

True, the leftist-dominated Supreme Court ordered the government to destroy the neighborhood. But the state prosecution gave the court's justices no other choice.

The case regarding Givat Haulpana exposes several of the pathologies of Israel's legal system. But by far the most glaring pathology it reveals is the politicization of the state prosecution by the radical leftists who run it.

In the event, the radical activist group Yesh Din petitioned the court in the name of a Palestinian who claimed to be the rightful owner of the land on which the neighborhood was built. Yesh Din presented the court with an affidavit in which the Palestinian claimed that the land in question belonged to him. Yesh Din then asked the court to make the state explain why, given the affidavit, the IDF had not yet evacuated the neighborhood.

On its face, the job of the state prosecution couldn't have been more obvious. All they had to do was tell the court that the issue of ownership is contested and that the court should require Yesh Din to adjudicate ownership in the lower courts.

So, too, they ought to have rejected the unsubstantiated assertion that the IDF is required to destroy homes built on private land. There is ample precedent for both positions, including a nearly identical case regarding a neighborhood in Barkan where the land in question belonged - without question - to a private Jewish landowner.

But the state prosecution decided not to take any of those obvious positions. By not questioning the veracity of the affidavit or the assertion that the IDF is required to destroy homes built on private land without the permission of the owner, the state prosecution, which is supposed to represent the elected government, left the justices no choice. All they could do was set a date for the expulsion of the 30 families living in the five apartment buildings. And so they did.

Both the Knesset and Netanyahu seem to recognize that Israel's elected leaders were manipulated by political radicals abusing their positions in the state prosecution to undermine the elected government. And they seem to be taking appropriate action. The Knesset has ordered the state comptroller to investigate the circumstances surrounding the state prosecution's mishandling of the Yesh Din petition. Netanyahu has ordered the construction of 300 buildings in Beit El and 851 homes in all of Judea and Samaria. He has formed a ministerial committee that will oversee the state prosecution's handling of future cases regarding Palestinian claims to land housing Jewish communities.

None of this solves the problem of the 30 families who through no fault of their own are slated to become homeless in the next three weeks because public officials abused their office to throw these families from their homes and divide and destroy the nationalist camp. But it may make prosecutorial malpractice a less attractive option for these homegrown Alinskyites.

The Alinsky strategy is brilliant in its cunning mendacity. And his followers in the American Jewish community and Israel have already succeeded in causing great harm. The stakes are high in both countries. The time has come for the majority of American Jews and Israelis to stop being cowed and confused by their destructive manipulations.

Israel"s heroism of survival

Israel"s heroism of survival

From the amazing Daniel Greenfield at Sultan Knish a few excerpts from his gorgeous essay

Israel's military victories were never the results of an inspired military or political leadership. While the anniversary of the Six-Day War has led to an outpouring of adoration for the usual suspects; the khaki-garbed generals striding victoriously through a carefully cropped photo, even if one of them had come down with a nervous breakdown not long before, Israeli generals have never been geniuses, the best-known ones have carried their own press releases into battle, and have walked a fine line between daring and criminal incompetence. Their victories were won for them by the men in the field, who survived to carry out their operations.

If Israeli generals are overrated, then Israeli governments are far worse, and, considering the number of generals who have played a role in politics, the confluence of the two conditions is not surprising. Israeli governments have, for the most part, been timid, cowardly and incompetent. (Which is to say that they were, for the most part, a lot like the governments of the rest of the West.)

and
All this makes the Six-Day War that much more impressive and awe-inspiring. An act of G-d done through the hands of fighting men in a country facing annihilation. And it is also a reminder that Israel's survival does not depend on its governments. If past governments had been able to fully enact their peace agendas, there likely would be no Israel. Can such governments celebrate the Six-Day War? Do they have any right to take credit for what they have given away and what they intend to give away?

Much as the Jewish People have been preserved by G-d and Anti-Semitism, Israel has been preserved by G-d and the irrational hatred of its Muslim neighbors. And between these poles is where the ordinary heroism of its people emerges. This is not the heroism of brazen trumpets and endless victory parades-- but the heroism of survival.

Men glorify war in order to deny the mortality of the killing fields. But day-to-day survival is a much less glorious thing. It is not inspiring in the same overtly transcendent way. It is merely life. It is the routine of surviving from one battle to the next, one generation to the next, moving slowly toward the future, reciting Kaddish for the dead, and then going into the earth, while your children go on.
