"You shall not wrong one another and you shall fear your G‑d"—Leviticus 25:17. It is forbidden to verbally distress or humiliate another.

Hurtful Words
"You shall not wrong one another and you shall fear your G‑d"—Leviticus 25:17.
It is forbidden to verbally distress or humiliate another.
Examples:
  • If a person has sinned in his youth and then repented, one may not tell him, "Thank G‑d who has taken you away from that path to this good path!" or similar indirect references to his earlier faults that may cause him pain.
  • [If a person is suffering from illness, one may not say (as Job's friends did), "Has anyone perished who was totally innocent?"
  • If you see people who seek to purchase grain, do not tell them that they can obtain it by a certain person, who in reality has nothing to sell.
  • Do not enter a store and ask, "How much does this item cost?" when you have no intention to make a purchase.]
Our Sages taught that hurtful words are, in fact, a graver sin than defrauding another of money.

Responsibility to Others

Responsibility To Others
Kislev 19, 5772 · December 15, 2011

Jewish teaching commands us to have love of G-d, and also love of one's fellow. If a person's private piety makes him forget his duties towards other people, he is probably on the wrong track, and his actions could lead to disaster. This point is illustrated by the role of Reuben in this week's Parshah.
Our Parshah describes the conflict amongst the twelve sons of Jacob. Joseph, who was his father's favorite, had dreams of future greatness in which his brothers bow down to him. His brothers were angered by this. One day they caught the young Joseph and threw him into a pit. Reuben was the oldest son of Jacob. He was upset by this turn of events, but felt unable to influence his brothers' actions. However, he determined that later he would come back to the pit and rescue Joseph, in order to bring him home to their father.
This plan would have worked except for the fact of Reuben's personal religious piety which sometimes blinded him to the true needs of the moment. After throwing Joseph in the pit, the brothers sat down to eat. At that crucial time, Reuben should have stayed with them in order to ensure Joseph's safety. Instead he went away. Why? One reason given for this is because, as the Sages tell us, he had a private program of solitary prayer and fasting.1 Like many very pious people, he thought of himself as a sinner who had to repent. Unfortunately, he allowed his quest for personal piety to override his wider sense of responsibility.
While Reuben was away fasting and praying, the brothers decided to sell Joseph to some passing merchants. By the time Reuben returned, there was no way of catching up with them and getting Joseph back. Reuben was filled with grief, but it was too late. His private desire for religious fulfillment had made him forget the wider responsibility which the Torah imposes on each individual: concern for others.

Day 82 - Beyond Reproach SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM — Laws of Loshon Hora 10:9-10

Shmiras Haloshon Yomi

18 Kislev, 5772 / December 14, 2011

Day 82 - Beyond Reproach

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM — Laws of Loshon Hora 10:9-10

In the previous segment, we learned that when negative information needs to be related l’toeles (for a constructive purpose) and rebuke is not possible, then the report must be said in the presence of at least three people.

In this segment, the Chofetz Chaim tells us that there is an exception to this rule: When the speaker is respected as a man of truth and a straightforward individual who would not say anything behind someone’s back that he would not say in his presence, then he can relate the information privately and does not need to speak in front of three people.

As explained in the previous segment, three people are needed when there is a possibility that the speaker will be suspected of lying or trying to speak badly of someone without that person finding out. As a public forum, the group of three gives credibility to both the speaker and his report. However, when the speaker is respected as being a man of absolute integrity, he will not be suspected of lying or of improper motives. Therefore, there is no need for a group of three.

The Chofetz Chaim concludes this segment by pointing out a difference between a report involving a sin between man and his fellow and one involving a sin between man and Hashem. In the latter case, such information can be related l’toeles only if the person has intentionally committed this sin numerous times, and only if it is something which we would expect the average religious Jew to recognize as a sin.

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM Truth Or Personal Feud

A Lesson A Day

18 Kislev, 5772/ December 14, 2011

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM

Day 78 – Quest for Truth or Personal Feud

The Mishnah (Avos 5:20) contrasts machlokes l’sheim shamayim, a dispute for the sake of Heaven, with one that is not.  The former is epitomized by the disputes of Hillel and Shammai whose differing views in matters of halacha, Jewish Law, are reverently studied and pondered generation after generation as eternal components of the Oral Law.  The latter is epitomized by the dispute of Korach, whose personal feud against Moshe Rabbeinu earned him an untimely death and eternal dishonor.  As the Chofetz Chaim notes in his preface to Sefer Chofetz Chaim, one whose sinful talk fuels strife transgresses the prohibition, “that he not be like Korach and his assembly” (Bamidbar 17:5, see Sanhedrin 110a).

To the Jew, intellectual disagreement in a common search for truth is an integral part of life.  As a spiritual, thinking people, Jews are forever involved in discussion of ideas.

Conversely, personal bickering, jealousy, and competition are signs of immaturity and weakness.  They have no place in the world of the Jew.

The difficulty, however, lies in our tendency to transform every dispute into an ideological one.  Korach, too, came with a philosophy: that all Jews are equally holy, and thus there is no justification for one family, Aharon and his Kohanim descendants, to be above everyone else.  The sages teach that Korach’s argument was rooted in jealousy, resulting from his having been passed over for the position of prince of his Levite family.
Before embarking on an ideological campaign against others, one must ask himself: “Am I honestly promoting the cause of truth, or am I involved in a personal feud disguised as an ideological debate?”
Ideological disagreement should never lead to personal animosity.  When Torah scholars disagree, their dispute is over ideals, and is never personal.  When a scholar is involved in a dispute, his followers must be careful not to become involved in a matter that is not their own, and certainly should avoid character assassination and personal hatred towards his opponent.

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON

At All Costs

If one finds oneself embroiled in feud, he dare not rest until he has fully extricated himself from it. One must strive with every ounce of resolve to remove himself from strife, no matter how difficult this may be.

The Torah relates that initially Ohn ben Peles was among the leaders of Korach’s camp in his rebellion against Moshe (Bamidbar 16:1). Yet he managed to separate himself from Korach’s group and thus was not punished when their time came.

Do not be convinced by the evil inclination’s arguments and incitements that, for example, it is below one’s dignity not to follow through in a dispute until victory is achieved. Better to experience embarrassment on this world than to be shamed in the World Above in the presence of the entire Heavenly Assembly.

Our Sages state: “Better that a person be called a fool all his life than to be considered a wicked person even for a moment before the Omnipresent” (Mishnah Ediyos 5:6).

Day 72 - To a Non-Jew

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM — Laws of Loshon Hora 8:12

At one time or another, we hear derogatory remarks about Jews. It is tragic enough when such remarks are made by Jews to Jewish listeners. Even more tragic is when they are told by Jews to co-workers, business associates, or others who are not Jewish. The subject of these remarks might be an individual Jew, a specific group of Jews, or Jews in general.

The Chofetz Chaim declares that to speak loshon hora about a Jew when the listener is a gentile is a much greater sin than when the listener is a Jew. One who is guilty of this sin “disgraces the honor of Israel and desecrates the Name of Heaven.”

There is yet another reason for the particular severity of this sin. When one speaks loshon hora to a fellow Jew, there is a possibility that the listener will not be quick to accept the report as fact—especially if he is someone familiar with the laws of loshon hora. Gentiles, on the other hand, certainly do not have a predisposition towards judging Jews favorably. Upon hearing the derogatory report, the gentile will be quick to believe it and pass the information on to others.

When a Jew denigrates other Jews in the presence of gentiles, he is, in essence, contradicting the purpose of his own existence. Our mission in this world as a people is to spread the honor of Hashemby serving as His representatives before the rest of the world. We say in Shema each day: “V’Ahavta es Hashem Elokecha” And you shall love Hashem, your God (Devarim 6:4). Our Sages teach (Yoma 86a) that we demonstrate our love of Hashem by making His Name beloved in the eyes of others. When a Jew studies Torah, speaks pleasantly to people and deals honestly in business, then people say, “Praiseworthy is the father who taught him Torah; praiseworthy is the teacher who taught him Torah. See how beautiful and correct are his ways and deeds.”

Thus the damage caused by relating loshon hora to gentiles goes far beyond loshon hora, which is devastating in itself. Instead of using his abilities to increase Hashem’s honor, the speaker has been guilty of chillul Hashem (desecration of Hashem’s Name).

From Robert Spencer at Jihadwatch.com

July 23, 2011

Norway's Aftenposten is blaming me, Bat Ye'or and Fjordman for Breivik's mass murders -- as if killing a lot of children aids the defense against the global jihad and Islamic supremacism, or has anything remotely to do with anything we have ever advocated.
For that matter, no one has explained or can explain how this guy's supposed anti-jihad views have anything to do with his murdering children.
Scenario #1:
1. Islamic preachers and texts preach violence and hate.
2. Islamic jihadists kill people.
3. Media and Islamic spokesmen say that only Islamophobes think #1 is even happening, or if it is, that it has anything to do with #2.
Scenario #2:
1. Freedom fighters preach free speech, freedom of conscience and equality of rights for all people, against Sharia and Islamic supremacism that denies those rights, advocating only legal means of protest and dissent.
2. Some nutcase who allegedly expressed allegiance with the freedom fighters kills people, none of whom are preaching Sharia or Islamic supremacism.
3. Media assumes that #1 caused #2 and blames freedom fighters.
SIOA and SIOE declare our sympathy for the victims and relatives of the victims of the heinous mass murders in Norway. We denounce the attacker and reiterate our dedication to the defense of free societies and opposition to all vigilantism and violence. Attempts to link us to these murders on the basis of alleged postings by the murderer mentioning us are absurd and offensive. Our work is and always has been wholly focused upon defending humane values and freedoms. There is no way that any sane person could possibly conclude that committing mass murder of children would advance the principles for which we stand. And if he was not sane, then any imputation of responsibility to us falters on that basis. Islamic jihadists and supremacists routinely invoke Islamic texts and teachings to justify violence, and thus those teachings are and should be rightly held up to scrutiny; by contrast, our record of support for human rights and the dignity of all human beings is consistent and unbroken. This murderer should be punished to the full extent of the law; any attempts to tar freedom fighters with his actions is deplorable.
"SIOE Group barred suspected Norway killer from forum," from Reuters, July 23 (thanks to Pamela Geller):
(Reuters) - A fringe [sic] European anti-Islamist lobby group said on Saturday the man suspected of Norway's gun and bomb massacre had tried to join their Facebook group on the Internet but had been rejected over his apparent neo-Nazi links.
Anders Gravers, founder of Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE), said Anders Behring Breivik had made the application around 18 months ago.
Breivik said in an Internet posting in December 2009 (here) he had had discussions with SIOE, but Gravers said his organisation had no record of this.
"He has never been in contact with us and he has never given us any advice," Gravers told Reuters.
But he said it was possible Breivik had attended one of its demonstrations.
He said an SIOE member in the Faroe Islands had checked Breivik's Facebook "friends" on the social media site when he tried to join and discovered one who used a picture of Danish neo-Nazi leader Jonni Hansen as his profile picture.
"He advised us not to allow this guy to join or be able to post on the Facebook wall (message page)," said SIOE co-founder Stephen Gash.
SOIE, which says it has 30,000 followers on Facebook, was founded by Gravers and Gash in 2007 with the aim of "preventing Islam becoming a dominant political force in Europe."
Gash said the organisation is unpolitical and opposes both Islam and Nazism....

Internet Will Reduce Teachers Unions

The Internet Will Reduce Teachers Union Power

Online learning means fewer teachers (and union members) per student.

This has been a horrible year for teachers unions. The latest stunner came in Michigan, where Republicans enacted sweeping reforms last month that require performance-based evaluations of teachers, make it easier to dismiss those who are ineffective, and dramatically limit the scope of collective bargaining. Similar reforms have been adopted in Wisconsin, Ohio, New Jersey, Indiana, Tennessee, Idaho and Florida.
But the unions' hegemony is not going to end soon. All of their big political losses have come at the hands of oversized Republican majorities. Eventually Democrats will regain control, and many of the recent reforms may be undone. The financial crisis will pass, too, taking pressure off states and giving Republicans less political cover.
The unions, meantime, are launching recall campaigns to remove offending Republicans, initiative campaigns to reverse legislation, court cases to have the bills annulled, and other efforts to reinstall the status quo ante—some of which are likely to succeed. As of today, they remain the pre-eminent power in American education.
Over the long haul, however, the unions are in grave trouble—for reasons that have little to do with the tribulations of this year.
The first is that they are losing their grip on the Democratic base. With many urban schools abysmally bad and staying that way, advocates for the disadvantaged are demanding real reform and aren't afraid to criticize unions for obstructing it. Moderates and liberals in the media and even in Hollywood regularly excoriate unions for putting job interests ahead of children. Then there's Race to the Top—initiated over union protests by a Democratic president who wants real reform. This ferment within the party will only grow in the future.
Then there's a crucial dynamic outside of politics: the revolution in information technology. This tsunami is only now beginning to swell, and it will hit the American education system with full force over the next few decades. The teachers unions are trying to stop it, but it is much bigger than they are.
Online learning now allows schools to customize coursework to each child, with all kids working at their own pace, receiving instant remedial help, exploring a vast array of courses, and much more. The advantages are huge. Already some 39 states have set up virtual schools or learning initiatives that enroll students statewide, often providing advanced placement courses, remedial courses, and other offerings that students can't get in their local schools.
The national model is the Florida Virtual School, which offers a full academic curriculum, has more than 220,000 course enrollments per year, and is a beacon of innovation. Outside of government, tech entrepreneurs like K12 and Connections Academy are swarming all over the education sector. They are the innovative force behind the rise of virtual charters, which now operate in 27 states, enroll some 200,000 full-time students (who typically do their studying at home), and stand at the cutting edge of technology's advance.
This is just the opening salvo. Most American parents want their kids to actually go to school—to a physical place. So the favored virtual schools of the future will be hybrids of traditional and online learning. There are already impressive examples.
At the high-performing Rocketship schools in San Jose, Calif., for example, students take a portion of their academics online—generating $500,000 in savings per school annually. Schools use that money for higher teacher salaries and one-on-one tutoring.
As the cyber revolution comes to American education, it will bring about a massive and cost-saving substitution of technology for labor. That means far fewer teachers (and union members) per student. It also means teachers will be far less concentrated in geographic districts, as those who work online can be anywhere. It'll thus be far more difficult for unions to organize. There will also be much more diversity in educational offerings, and money and jobs will flow out of the (unionized) regular schools into new (nonunion) providers of online options.
The confluence of these forces—plus the shifting political tides among Democrats—will inexorably weaken the unions, sapping them of members, money and power. It will render them less and less able to block reform. The political doors will increasingly swing open to reforms that simply make good sense for children and for society.
So the unions can weather the Republican attacks of 2011. But the real threats to their power are more subtle, slowly developing—and potent.
Mr. Moe is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and professor of political science at Stanford University. His latest book is "Special Interest: Teachers Unions and America's Public Schools" (Brookings Institution Press, 2011).

How shameful is this. We have lost over 4000 American men and women in Iraq to give them freedom, we have also had over 20,000 wounded, many severely for the rest of their lives, we have spent over a trillion $$$$$ and now Iraq sides with the bloody Iranians against US? WOW.

Remembering Six Days in 1967 - By Michael Oren Foreign Policy

Not that facts and logic and history mean anything at all the policy makers like Obama that just want to be rid of what they think of as the hated Israel, but Mr. Oren makes a very succint and cogent argument about why the myth of the 1967 borders is more than foolishness, it is inviting a war a lot of dead Jews

Jim DeMint: The new Gipper? « Hot Air Headlines

NO WAY... Repubs need to understand that presidential politics are not all about policy. We elected Obama basically because he is a Showtime guy...Good look, strong speaker, able to like shamelessly while looking people directly in the eye, even though he is clearly ignorant of economic policy and foreign policy or he is so radical that he is getting what he wants, destroying the economy, destroying Israel, making us the laughing stock of the world.

Romney, Pawlenty, Huntsman, DeMint??? They are all so boring you fall asleep 3 minutes after they start speaking. We need someone that generates enthusiasm and who can get an electorate motivated and excited...Sarah Palin

‘Proof That S.F.’s Circumcision Ban Is Anti-Semitic’ The Blaze

We see Jew bashing being covered up as Israel bashing, but anyone that actually takes the time and has an open enough mind sees that 98% of the Israel bashing is just Jew hatred, anti-Semitism...why else are the facts never part of the discussion, just the Arafat created myths and why else is it that Israel receive about 95% of all UN hate resolutions and why is it that it is only Israel, tiny little Israel, whose existence and borders are always being questioned.

But this stuff from San Francisco is like part of Nazi Germany. It is all open now. These folks in San Fran should be shamed and shunned and the rest of the country should impose travel and purchase sanctions on San Fran just for merely tolerating this initiative, forget about passing it.

By the way, the ban would be a violation of the First Amendment anyways

Klavan's One-State Solution: Give the Middle East to the Jews

A New Peace Plan for the Middle East FrontPage Magazine

This deserves a double post. This article carefully goes through the facts and history of Israel and shows conclusively that there is no illegal occupation by Israel, that it is the Jews that are the indigenous people of Israel, that Abbas's recent bullshit article in the NY Time is an attempt to distort history, he learned well at Moscow University where he got his doctorate in denying Jewish history.

This goes to the core of my argument, supported by Obama's speech in May of this year at State Dept, where he basically admitted that he is tired of Jews and really does not care about the facts, he just wants to be buddies with the muslims and if he has to throw the Jews under the bus, well, much of the world will support him on that. We really have never has a president that has unequivocally just embraced the facts and told the Arabs to go fly a kite. They already have Jordan and unless and until there is a compete cessation of violence and jihad for very long time, there will never be another arab entity in Israel.

Great job Mr. Solway...and thank you

Move the US Embassy to Jerusalem

Move the US Embassy to Jerusalem

If you go online to the US Embassy in Jerusalem you will see that Obama and Hillary have already given Jerusalem to the Arabs. It is shameful and what is worse for me is that my two Senators from New York are not demanding that the president from their own party stop this insult to the Jews and to American values

Whose Jerusalem?: 40 Years Ago Today, Holy City Rescued From Muslim Occupation

This was done 4 years ago, so now it is 44 years, but the info and facts are the same. Jerusalem should never, ever be divided again and it must remain in the control of a Jewish Israel forever...or until Moshiach comes

“Tsunami of September” | FrontPage Magazine

“Tsunami of September” FrontPage Magazine

This increasing attack on Israel is partly Israels fault, primarily because too many Jews in Israel are constantly attacking the Jews of Judea and Samaria and taking cheap shots at Jewish Jews. And the Rabin, Peres Oslo agreement was a total and complete mistake and blunder. As Lincoln stated, A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand. But the US and the West are also responsible for this. Anyone with a brain knows the issue is that the muslims dont want any Jewish state in Israel. The issue is not and never has been the borders, it is about killing and/or expelling the Jews from Israel, and yet the US and western government move forward on the pretence that the issue is not the muslims desire to kill the Jews. And too many American Jews still support this unequivocally anti-Israel Obama team. Obama and his admin are hard line leftists that hate Israel because it is a symbol of the West and Western capitalist society. Denying this just denies that water is wet and that the sun is hot/
